Last Saturday night the North Shore Mustangs pulled off a late victory over the St. Leonard Cougars in their biggest test all year to become the 2009 Bruno Heppell Division League Champs.
The Mustangs won the game 10-7 in a great defensive battle that had the fans on the edge of their seats.
The first touchdown of the game was scored by veteran RB JP Bouvier to make the score 7-0 at halftime. In the second quarter veteran QB Max St. James was taken out of the game with a minor leg injury and was replaced by rookie Jay Mackay.
The Cougars came back in the second half to tie the score at 7-7. Both teams exchanged possessions as the tension was building. The Mustangs made adjustments to go with a 3 man backfield which allowed rookie QB Jay Mackay to orchestrate a march downfield to get to the Cougar 12 yard line where the drive ended. Rookie receiver Daniel Perrault, who also handles kicking duties, booted a successful 19 yard field goal to win the game.
The Cougars made one last attempt to tie the game, but the field goal was blocked. North Shore Mustangs 10 Cougars 7.
Rookie Mustangs Head Coach Jason Jourdenais was quoted, “We still have mental mistakes happening, but I am proud of the character and determination displayed by the team in a hard fought win”.
Offensively the start was slow, but eventually it was a team effort that grinded out the victory.
Defensively DB Theo Ojeaha had 2 interceptions; LB Alex Gascon and DL Wilson Paiement had strong games as well.
Last week the Mustangs beat Greenfield Park 50-10.
The Mustangs final game will be played at home on Glenn McHugh Field @ 7:30pm Saturday October 24 when they play host to the Lanaudiere Rhinos. |
